Turkey, Montenegro, Georgia, Albania, Bosnia, Armenia, North Macedonia, India, Bali, and Uzbekistan offer the most no-deposit options. Many local agencies in these countries rent cars with zero security deposit.
The UAE leads globally with an average deposit of $800, followed by Qatar ($600), Iceland (€500), Oman ($500), and Australia ($500). Gulf states consistently require the largest deposits.
Yes, in many countries — especially Turkey, the Balkans, and parts of Southeast Asia. Local agencies often accept debit cards, cash deposits, or waive the deposit requirement entirely.
The global average car rental deposit across 57 countries is approximately €279. However, this varies dramatically — from €0 in countries like Turkey to over $800 in the UAE.
Deposits protect rental companies against potential damage, fuel charges, traffic fines, and toll violations. The amount typically depends on the car category, local insurance regulations, and the company's risk assessment.
Yes. No-deposit rentals are legitimate offerings, particularly common with local agencies. The key is to check insurance coverage, read the rental agreement, and document the vehicle condition before departure.
No. While most international chains (Hertz, Avis, Europcar) require a credit card deposit, many local and regional agencies — especially in Turkey, the Balkans, and Southeast Asia — offer rentals with no deposit at all. Our index shows that 12 out of 57 countries have high or very high availability of no-deposit rentals.
It depends heavily on the country and the rental company. Deposits range from €0 in countries like Turkey and Montenegro to over $1,500 in the UAE. The global average is approximately €279. Economy cars typically require lower deposits than SUVs or luxury vehicles.
Many local agencies accept debit cards, especially in Turkey, the Balkans, Georgia, and parts of Asia. International chains usually require a credit card for the deposit hold. Some agencies accept cash deposits as an alternative. Always confirm the payment method when booking.
If the car is returned in good condition, most companies release the deposit hold within 5–14 business days. Cash deposits are returned immediately upon car return. Some credit card companies may take up to 30 days to process the release. This timeline varies by provider and banking institution.
Gulf states have higher deposits due to several factors: expensive vehicle fleets (luxury and SUV-heavy), high repair costs, aggressive driving conditions, and strict traffic fine systems where the rental company may be liable. Additionally, the market is dominated by large international chains that enforce standard global deposit policies.
Our Deposit Risk Score (1–10) measures how likely a renter is to face unexpectedly high deposit requirements. A score of 1–3 means low risk (many no-deposit options, reasonable amounts). A score of 7–10 means high risk (large deposits required, few alternatives). The score factors in average deposit amount, deposit-to-rental-price ratio, and no-deposit availability.
Yes, no-deposit car rentals are legitimate and safe. They are especially common with local agencies in countries like Turkey, Montenegro, and Georgia. To protect yourself: read the rental agreement carefully, check insurance coverage, take photos of the car before and after, and choose agencies with positive reviews.
